TSIFB Chapter 5

穿成校草被迫营业 / Transmigrated into a School Idol and Forced to Do Business
Kabedon

During noon the next day, there were very few people in the classroom. A voice cut through the corridor and reached the second grade’s Class 5.

“Mr He… Yan-ge… Yan-ge…”

Hearing the familiar voice, He Yan froze for half a second inside his classroom.

After a while, the voice made its way to the entrance of Class 5.

Pan Yi grabbed a boy, pointed to the door of Class 5, panting, and asked, “Is He Yan in this class?”

The boy nodded with a disorientated expression.

Before waiting for the boy to say anything else, Pan Yi released the person and rushed directly into the Class 5. He glanced at the students inside but didn’t find that familiar face among the few. He asked the person next to him, “Is He Yan not here yet?”

Since the person was Pan Yi, the girl he asked blushed and pointed to the last group of people in the fourth row near the corridor.

Pan Yi didn’t spare any time to care about the girl’s feelings and quickly walked towards He Yan. “Yan… Yan-ge?”

He Yan lifted his head.

Pan Yi took a look at the delicate brown eyes behind the lens of the glasses before his own eyes started to turn red.

The two left and went to a corner of the floor below where there were fewer people.

“When I opened my fucking eyes I found myself actually vacationing with my mom in Maldives! Shit! I clearly remembered we were in a car accident on the road, so shouldn’t I be dead? Even if we didn’t die, I should’ve opened my eyes in a Vegas hospital!

“My mum was talking about the university entrance examination, and I said, what university entrance exam? I’m turning thirty in two years! Then my mother raised her hand and knocked me in the head, rattling on about how I’m still in grade two and that I should stop dreaming! Grade two? I’m still in grade two? Why did I suddenly become a high school student?? My head is like paste right now and I can’t understand anything. I remembered how both of us went to the same high school and was so anxious I immediately booked a flight from Maldives to come back and find you! Ah, I’m really going insane!!”

He Yan leaned against the wall, waiting quietly for Pan Yi to finish venting, and when Pan Yi was reaching the end of his spiel, he asked, “You have a cigarette?”

Hearing He Yan’s calm tone, Pan Yi gradually settled. He patted down his body and surprisingly felt a pack of cigarettes, which he handed to He Yan along with a Dunhill lighter. Pan Yi had once seen his elders use this type of lighter and, thinking that it would make him seem handsome, spent a large sum of money to buy it.

After taking a glance at the cigarette brand, Pan Yi hesitated and shrunk his hand back. “There are dozens of cigarettes in one box. Ge, how about you stop smoking?”

Before Pan Yi completely pulled back his hand, He Yan had already taken the cigarettes.

“The current situation is very clear. We’re not dead.” He Yan lit the fire and began to speak.

His voice was so terrifyingly serene that it was impossible to hear any emotion.

Pan Yi froze, then nodded, and said, “I can’t be fucking dreaming, right?”

“We are alive, but the time has reversed to eleven years ago.”

Pan Yi looked at the smoke that billowed around him, feeling sour in his heart. “What the hell is going on, ah? It’s just like a dream.”

Losing consciousness in a state of pain and suffocation, it all happened in just a second.

The exact day before yesterday.

He and He Yan were in Las Vegas to talk about cooperation for a project. At night, the two of them drove a car and passed an intersection when a black car suddenly rushed towards them, as if it had no driver. Afterwards, there was only the destructive sounds, the glaring fire, and the severe pain.

“That man was fucking crazy!” Pan Yi gritted his teeth with hatred. “Actually daring to hit the road at night after getting drunk off wine, was he that desperate to greet the king of Hell? Even dragging people into his idiocy, that mindless drunkard!”

“It wasn’t a drunkard.”

“Driving a car without any regard for the law, if not a drunk, then it’s…”

Halfway through, Pan Yi suddenly paused and looked at He Yan.”Yan-ge, you know who that person was?”

“En.”

“Then, that man was…”

He Yan extinguished the remaining half of the smoke left in his hand. “You’ll find out sooner or later.”

Hearing this, Pan Yiyi ended the discussion on the topic.

He trusted He Yan.

In swimming class, Yu Baizhou changed his clothes and came out, immediately causing the girls to burst out in screams.

A slender figure unique to teenagers, the chest, abdomen and arms with a thin layer of muscles, and naturally fair and soft skin. No matter which angle one uses to appreciate him, it was all the same tempting. Not to mention the exquisite and delicate facial features, this amount of charm was enough to make people start imagining things.

Yu Baizhou listened to the squeals next to him and blushed with embarrassment.

Yu Baizhou felt astonished all over again. He didn’t expect that, when he had transmigrated, not only was his name the same as the original, even his real appearance was the exact copy. If he had to find a difference, then it would probably be that the original was slightly stronger than himself, just by a little.

“Boss!” Tu Gaoming’s voice came from the side not too far away. Yu Baizhou turned his head to look at the source of sound and found Tu Gaoming walking his way while wearing red swimming trunks with a large flowery pattern, appearing especially cheerful.

Someone shouted “Tu-ge” and asked, “How come you’re wearing such a joyful look today?”

Tu Gaoming laughed and scolded, “Get lost! This is not a good year for laozi! Do you think anyone can have the same figure as our boss?”

The people next to him laughed and the atmosphere became more lively.

Yu Baizhou laughed along with them and when someone repeatedly shouted “Tu-ge”, he somehow heard it as “Tu ba-ge*”.

[T/N: “八哥”/ba-ge: Bugs bunny]

“You’re saying he’s not taking swimming classes again? Why did he even show up?”

“Everyone says he’s a freak.”

Yu Baizhou heard the conversation of several boys next to him and only then noticed He Yan sitting in the corner.

He Yan did not change into his swimsuit, still wearing the school uniform.

“Boss, let’s go, we have to gather.”

Yu Baizhou nodded, withdrew his eyes and left.

Today’s swimming class mixed three classes together. With their class, there was also Class 3 and Class 8.

After gathering and warming up, they were free to do what they wanted.

Yu Baizhou stood beside the swimming pool, looking quietly at the rippling pool water, feeling a little dizzy.

“Yu-shao, why don’t you get in the water?”

A suffocating thug-like voice came from not far away.

Yu Baizhou turned his head and saw a strong-looking boy. Tu Gaoming happened to be heading his way, holding a towel. Before Yu Baizhou spoke up, he hastened this pace towards the teenager and said in a displeased manner, “Xu Zhihu, what the hell did you come for? Here to stir up trouble?”

The students in the school were divided in two halves. One half was the slackers bunch, led by Yu Baizhou. The other half was the sports bunch, led by Li Bei. Why was it called the sports bunch? It was because everyone in the group had tall and strong physiques.

[T/N: “学渣派” translates to ‘school slacker clique’ and “运动派” translates to ‘sports clique’; I always found ‘clique’ weird when I used it, so I used ‘bunch’]

Xu Zhihu was someone from the sports bunch, and was considered second in command.

Xu Zhihu scrutinised Tu Gaoming and said slowly, “Oh, I was wondering who this was. Turned out to be a watchdog.”

Tu Gaoming’s face was full of disgust. “Fuck, your mum is a watchdog!”

Xu Zhihu ignored Tu Gaoming, walking straight towards Yu Baizhou with his chin pointing down at the pool. “Yu-shao, how about we compare once?”

On the side, He Yan was too lazy to listen to the farce. He raised his hand to roll his lower neck and got up to head towards the common room.

Yu Baizhou stared at this Xu Zhihu. With a big chest and big limbs, he didn’t appear to be a person with a brain.

Just as he was hesitating over the match this person proposed, Tu Gaoming beside him made the minimum amount of movement needed to shake his head very slightly.

Xu Zhihu noticed this little movement and said with a smile, “Did the watchdog break from his leash? Or are you trying to help your owner by intimidating me? Are you worried about your owner turning into chicken soup*?”

[T/N: “落汤鸡”: translates to chicken soup but means ‘a person who looks drenched and bedraggled’]

Tu Gaoming rushed over and raised his voice, “You fucking try say that to laozi again!”

Unfortunately, before he fully charged into Xu Zhihu, someone stopped him mid-way.

Yu Baizhou said to Xu Zhihu, “I’ll compete with you once.”

Hearing this, He Yan paused his walk to the common room.

Upon hearing Yu Baizhou’s answer, both Tu Gaoming and Che Cong, who was carrying juice over from some distance away and heard the conversation, wore stiff expressions. Che Cong suddenly had no thirst for the juice and hurried over to stop Yu Baizhou.

The infamous school bully Yu Baizhou…was actually a very dry duck*.

[T/N: someone who can’t swim]

Although this was only a rumor in school, the insiders knew that this couldn’t be more fucking true!

Tu Gaoming gaped at their boss, completely at a loss. “Boss!”

Yu Baizhou looked at him and said, “He insulted you.”

In an instant, Tu Gaoming’s heart was so moved and so confused, but his reason urged him to continue blocking Yu Baizhou.

Che Cong subtly hinted, “Boss, we don’t particularly have many hearts*, right?”

[T/N: like in video games, you have heart-health bar that shows how close you are to dying. Humans only have one, so YBZ shouldn’t be too reckless]

Yu Baizhou nodded.

Che Cong: “So we…”

Yu Baizhou: “Compete.”

Che Cong: “……”

Yu Baizhou had no idea why they kept going against him, but he was determined to compete in this match.

Xu Zhihu was obviously surprised that Yu Baizhou had agreed to the match he asked for, but since the other party had agreed, he did not want to disappoint. The towel that hung from his body was handed to a person on the side and he asked Yu Baizhou, “Yu-shao, you choose. What will we compete in?”

“Freestyle.”

“Fine.” Xu Zhihu smiled. “Then, the 100 metre freestyle.”

Hearing the news that Yu Baizhou and Xu Zhihu were going to compete, there was not a small amount of people that went over to spectate.

With two contestants, a girl from Class 3 acted as the referee.

Xu Zhihu faced Yu Baizhou and pretended to be humble. “Yu-shao, then let us begin?”

Yu Baizhou looked confident.

The girl was ready to give the sign.

Yu Baizhou looped around and went into the water using the small stairs.

Everyone was dumbfounded.

After a few seconds, Xu Zhihu’s people laughed.

Tu Gaoming and Che Cong covered their faces in embarrassment. Please, don’t overdo it.

Che Cong slightly chased after Yu Baizhou, signaling that he chose the wrong move and should get out.

Yu Baizhou: “……”

Yu Baizhou moved his muscles around in the water, proudly raised his chin in an unnoticeable motion, then climbed up again.

Yu-ge wasn’t panicking at all.

The girl prepared to give the sign once again. Yu Baizhou stood by the pool and got into a starting position. Xu Zhihu next to him turned his head, and the grin on his face faded. “Yu Baizhou, don’t fucking think that since our boss let you off, I would do the same. The person I look down on the most is someone like you.”

Yu Baizhou coldly sneered at him. “The person I look down on the most is also a person like you.”

With a “go”, the two jumped into the pool simultaneously and the calm blue surface broke with splashes of water.

Cheers came one after another.

Xu Zhihu struggled to swim forward and was in the lead, thus receiving the loudest noise. Yu Baizhou glanced between gaps, calling him a fool in his heart.

Xu Zhihu was the first to reach the opposite side, then began his swim back.

“Xu Zhihu is guaranteed to win, right? He has already swum back that many meters, while Yu-shao has only just finished swimming the first lap.”

“I reckon.”

“Not possible for this match.”

However, the turning point that was about to overthrow everyone’s guesses had appeared at this time.

They saw Yu Baizhou execute a perfect rollover, and with a speed that was significantly faster than his initial, he exceeded Xu Zhihu with an incredible momentum.

“Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Boss can actually swim?!” Tu Gaoming blurted out in disbelief.

Che Cong slapped a hand over his mouth.

“Here! Yu-shao is here!”

In the end, Yu Baizhou had been one step ahead of Xu Zhihu. He rubbed his black hair that was dripping with water twice, then turned around and leaned back, propping his arms on the edge of the pool, waiting leisurely for the ten metres Xu Zhihu had yet to complete.

Ah ah ah ah, too handsome! Yu-shao is too handsome!!”

Are you kidding?

Yu Baizhou looked at Xu Zhihu who was still in the water, thinking in his heart, “Your Yu-ge has been swimming in the river when he was a kid. I have never lost before so how could I lose to you today? What a nice joke!”

After the competition, Xu Zhihu’s face was extremely ugly.

Tu Gaoming regained his confidence and chased them back to their classes.

Afterwards, he excitedly gave a dry towel to Yu Baizhou, and in passing, whispered the lingering doubt that remained in his heart, “Boss, when did you learn to swim?”

Yu Baizhou paused. “Ah?”

Tu Gaoming spoke quietly, “Why are you pretending with me? Haven’t you always been a dry duck?”

Yu Baizhou: “?!”

Yu Baizhou only now found out that the original owner was a dry duck?!

By now, he could only place his hands on his face and whisper to Tu Gaoming, “Actually, I can swim. Real people do not show their faces, you understand, right? You have to be low-key.”

Tu Gaoming stuck a thumb up. “Awesome! No wonder you’re my boss!”

Yu Baizhou’s smile was full of satisfaction.

Although Yu Baizhou confessed to everything discreetly, it was all heard by He Yan, who was behind them.

He Yan narrowed his eyes.

He had never forgotten the third grade graduation party.

He remembered that Yu Baizhou at that time had accidentally fallen into the water, and even an ambulance had to be called…

Finished with the race, the atmosphere was restored to peace again, with only the sounds of conversation and water.

Nearing the end of the class, Yu Baizhou, worried about crowding later, head into the dressing room to change first.

When finished with his shower, he saw a person sitting on a stool in front of a locker. Body covered entirely by the school uniform, they looked very incompatible with swimming.

It was He Yan.

His own locker was some distance away from He Yan so without thinking too much, he went to the locker and took out a clean towel, wiping off the water droplets on his body.

The locker closed a little by itself.

The young boy’s fair skin had some more beauty under the natural light, and with the gentle and smooth facial features, even the movement of bringing his arm behind enough to wipe his back brought about a slight sense of art.

There was sudden movement from the side.

In his peripheral vision, Yu Baizhou saw He Yan get up and walk towards himself.

But very soon later, he denied any thoughts that arose.

He was in a position between He Yan and the doorway, so He Yan was probably just getting up to leave.

Yu Baizhou dried down his body and was about to reopen the locker to retrieve his clothes when suddenly, the light source behind him disappeared, and a palm passed his ear and the side of his face. The half-open locker was slammed shut.

Yu Baizhou was frightened out of his skin, but before he could react, a deep voice that was accompanied by a radiating heat spoke behind his ears, “Yu Baizhou…”

Hi guys, I’m putting a second chapter up for this week as an apology; I had picked up translating this novel although someone else (Vanilla Muse) had already begun to do so. I was only made aware that this was a disappointing act in the translation circle when they reached out to me, but that doesn’t excuse what I did. I hope that you can all forgive me and advise me on how to be a good translator, as I would hate to upset others who put their time and effort into something they love. Vanilla Muse was very kind to me when explaining the situation, so I give them all my thanks.

  1. :((( Nooo, does this mean that you will no longer continue translating this novel??? After all, Vanilla Muse already said that they were only picking up this novel to “relax” or something like that after translating so many ancient set novels :(( They said they were only translating one to two chapters a month:(((( Damn I’m so sad, I really liked this novel maybe I’ll just have to MTL it.

In any case, thank you for the work you’ve done so far. It is a shame that this happened.

    1. ***Edit*** the “sporadic schedule” now says: one to three chapter per month, still doubt that’s gonna happen, considering they are updating three novels in a weekly basis and took another three novels (including this one) as side projects. Sad_and_frustrated.jpg

  2. Well, IMO, things that mark a person out as a good translator are:
    a) accuracy and decent flow of the text,
    b) reasonable translation speed.
And this opinion may be unpopular, but I don’t agree that several translators working independently on the same story is something terrible. I think the situation when a project is claimed and gets updated once a month (if at all) is worse.
So I hope you’ll continue translating this novel – I’d say you’re doing a great job, but the final decision is up to you.
Thank you for the chapter! ❤

  3. You’re fine. You didn’t know about this translation circle stuff and it’s not like these informal “rules” are written up on a wall for newcomers to read. (If they are… whatever.) It was clear to me when you posted the first chapter that this was your first translation project. In my opinion, it isn’t reasonable for an experienced translator to expect someone new to contact them first, and even regard your actions like you’re some villain before exchanging any words. As you clarified, you weren’t trying to be rude, but wanted to practice and while doing so, share a story you like. I don’t think you have to apologize, and you’re doing a fantastic job with translating.

Thank you for the chapters ❤️ You have all my support~

    1. Thank you for the support! ❤ although I didn’t understand the situation before, I still made a mistake, so I apologised. No villains here, and I will learn from this experience :))

      1. Hi Syd, I just saw your note at the end of this chapter, and I want to affirm that you are not a villain, and I don’t see you as a villain. I also know that you’re not purposely being rude or anything like that. On the contrary, I think you’re marvelous for being so open to communication and suggestions. I’ve encountered a few malicious translators in the past and admittedly they’ve left a shadow on me. To be honest, I was really afraid of contacting you at first, because I didn’t know what kind of person you were. I didn’t want our situation to escalate into a fight. However, you are not like those translators at all, and I’m so glad I pushed myself to talk to you. When I first messaged you I was feeling a lot of unpleasant emotions (upset, afraid, and distressed), so I apologize if the way I worded anything made you feel attacked.

We’re all just people who want to enjoy a good story, and you just happened to be new to the scene. I don’t want you to lose your love for this story over a misunderstanding that we have already resolved. And very peacefully at that! ^-^

I forgot to mention last time, but the forums are a good place to go for help. https://forum.novelupdates.com/ It can be any kind of help. For example, if you read a story that you liked but forgot the title, you can go on the forums and describe the plot of the story. Then someone who is familiar with the story can remind you of the title. I did that once. You can also ask for help translating a phrase, or ask for people to suggest stories to you based on your preferences (both to read and to translate). The first novel I picked up was also one that someone else had been translating and then dropped. As a newbie I wasn’t sure of the etiquette in the circle, so I went on the forums for help and the people there were really nice. That’s also when I learned about the 3 month waiting period. It’s not a solid rule though, as long as the previous translator is okay with it, you can even pick up a novel on the same day that they drop it. The waiting period is a courtesy to translators who have been inactive for a while, to give them time to reclaim their project just in case real life is kicking them in the butt away from the computer. XP After 3 months, then we can assume that they’ve lost interest and the story is up for grabs.

That’s all the advice I can think of at the moment. All the best. 🙂

        1. I didn’t feel attacked or anything like that when you contacted me! Any emotions you felt would’ve been completely understandable, and I’m also very glad that we solved this peacefully (as well as enlightening me, haha) despite my beginner’s ignorance. Thank you for all of your advice, especially the 3-month waiting period; I would hate to upset another person. I’m sorry for any stress I caused you during this time, and I’ll do this story justice!!

          1. To Syd: I’m always happy to have more translators on board to help spread the love of BL everywhere. Heehee. And I’m glad someone open-minded like you is joining the circle. Let’s look on the bright side, now TSIFB is being translated faster, and I’ll have time to look for another BL project to bring to the table and spread more love. 😊

To Jujube: Your comment cracked me up. That sounds like the plot of a novel I might be reading/translating. I honestly wasn’t thinking about how it would look like on the outside, because I was so stuck inside my head at the time. I tend to get overly neurotic about confrontations and my first reaction is always avoidance, although I realize that is not always the best solution and communication is important. Now that things have been resolved and I’ve calmed down, I can laugh when I look at the situation from afar. Not sure if you also read otome-based Japanese novels, but your comment gave me vague “villainess noble girl” situation vibes. Haha. 😆

        2. I was the one who misunderstood you. Sorry about that. (I thought I was reading a plot out of a novel where a white lotus blackens the innocent MC.*) I also didn’t think of your side of the story as much. I’m glad you took the courage to reach out and resolve things.

*Summary: Rather than contacting first, Bai leaves an “innocuous” comment that riles the fans, then proceeds to contact MC about the matter and how upset they are. The MC is guilt-ridden and apologetic while Bai counsels, yet stresses things like “bad intentions.” The MC is so guilty they go as far as to ask their new fans for forgiveness, and this (idiot) fan here is sitting thinking, What are you doing?! You’re being blackened! Have you not seen the drop in likes? (Maybe people are busy with their own lives and not reading, but anyway, apparently I have a very large brain hole.)

  4. As far as I know, if a story hasn’t been updated in 3 months then you can pick it up, so I was kind of surprised to see someone else translating it at the same time as Vanilla Muse. But since you didn’t know, I think it’s okay!

In case other readers don’t know, Vanilla Muse said that they will be posting the chapters they had already translated and then officially drop it, so don’t be surprised if you see more updates from VM in novelupdates.

    Thanks for translating. 🙂

    1. Many people have informed me about the 3-month waiting period as well as leaving amazing advice! Although, just because I didn’t know doesn’t make it okay, so that’s why I’ll do my best to learn and gain experience. Thank you for reading :))

  5. Jujube’s comment made me look back on the first message I sent you, and in retrospect I feel like I’m the one who sounds rude. (>﹏<) At the time I had just word-vomited all the jumbled thoughts inside my head. I was hoping that you would just give me a simple "yes, I'm going to complete this story," and that would be the end of our interaction/confrontation. But you were so polite and you even apologized. Then I had this weirdly inflated feeling like I should be guiding you since you're new and I'm old. Ugghh… (。ŏ﹏ŏ) I'm embarrassed re-reading my own words. This is why I don't like talking to new people, I'm so bad at it. I hope I didn't come across as uppity to you. I'm old but so not cool. (If this were a xianxia novel, I would be that one shixiong who gets slapped for putting his foot in his mouth.) Lol. All of your responses were refreshing and helped to set me at ease. (◍•ᴗ•◍)

    1. Don’t worry! People’s tones over the internet are very hard to decipher, but you never came off as rude to me. I admit that I am pretty young, so to have a shixiong (hahah) like you who guided and advised me is very nice!

      1. Ahhhhhh! I meant that as an analogy only, please don’t call me shixiong, I’m not worthy! 😱
It really is hard to interpret tone through text, but my impression of you is bright and motivated to improve! 😁

And.. what? He Yan and that other guy is a reincarnator? Whoooaaaaa what a twist haha

Thank you so much for the chapter!!!~ 🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇

  7. I was so confused when I started reading chapter 6 and noticed I hadn’t read this XD

He Yan was reborn!!! And the culprit of his death… could it be Yu Baizhou? But now he noticed there’s something off with him, soooooooo he’ll watch over YBZ, for sure. Exciting exciting exciting!!

    Thanks for the chapter!

I didn’t know about Vanilla Muse’s claiming over this novel… but I must confess I knew about this novel thanks to them. It’s great you could talk and got to an agreement.

  8. um, hey if possible, could you clarify this line
“Boss, we don’t particularly have many hearts, right?”
Or, add a T/N? I find the meaning confusing

    Like

    1. Yup, I’ll add a T/N, but it’s basically about how in games (like Minecraft), players have several hearts as a health bar, but humans only have one, so YBZ shouldn’t act how he wishes (since OG YBZ didn’t know how to swim and will drown…). Sorry, the first few chapters are particularly rough, thanks for telling me it sounds clunky, though!

  9. Hi Syd! I am so happy that you translated this novel. Thank you! FYI in a much wider circle of paid translators of published novels it is normal to have multiple versions by very different translators. And we readers can chose the version that we love. Even the Bible had been translated by dozens of different people and they keep coming. How bold of them! But we benefit from it, of course. So, please, remember that some of us simply love your personality and style that shine through the text and feel comfortable reading your translations. They are a gift for us, a gift of having a choice. Vanilla Muse is awesome too and I read everything she translates. Her translation style is very clean and steady, really enjoyable and stands apart. You are simply two different people with different hearts and different language styles. And thank you for the husky saving days novel too, Syd. I love it so much. Thank you! 💖💖💖

    1. Thank you very much for the support! It was a needed learning experience back when I first posted this chapter, and VM was very kind when helping me. Translating is something I wanted to do to spread Chinese novels to a wider audience, and I’m very glad and thankful readers like you stay along for the ride and continue on to a brand new story :))
